Cartier Santos de Cartier Medium WSSA0029: A Buyer’s Guide to the Modern Classic
The medium steel Santos WSSA0029 combines disciplined dimensions, Cartier calibre 1847 MC, and interchangeable bracelet and strap systems. Here is what buyers should know.

The Santos de Cartier Medium, reference WSSA0029, combines one of Cartier’s most recognizable case designs with dimensions that are restrained by modern sports-watch standards. Its square steel case measures 41.9 mm by 35.1 mm and is only 8.83 mm thick, while the automatic 1847 MC movement and 100-metre water resistance make it more practical than its dressy appearance might suggest.
The WSSA0029 is also a complete bracelet-and-strap package. Cartier supplies a steel bracelet with its SmartLink adjustment system and a second calfskin strap. Both use the company’s QuickSwitch interchangeability system. For a buyer, that combination of proportion, design and adaptability is the central appeal of this exact reference.

These specifications belong to the medium steel WSSA0029. They should not be copied onto the larger WSSA0018, two-tone Santos models, quartz Santos-Dumont references or another Cartier configuration that merely looks similar.
Why the medium dimensions matter
Square and rectangular watches cannot be judged by width alone. The WSSA0029 is 35.1 mm wide, but its 41.9 mm vertical dimension and broad square dial give it more visual presence than a 35 mm round watch. At the same time, its 8.83 mm thickness keeps the case relatively slim.
That balance is why the medium model deserves to be tried on rather than dismissed from a specification sheet. The integrated-looking bracelet, exposed bezel screws and strong dial geometry make the watch noticeable, while the shorter dimensions help it avoid the oversized appearance that a square case can develop quickly.
For remote purchases, ask for a straight-on wrist photograph and a side profile on a wrist close to your own size. Wide-angle phone images can distort the case, making the watch look either larger or smaller than it will in person.
The Santos design language
The WSSA0029 uses the details that make the modern Santos immediately recognizable: a square dial with rounded corners, Roman numerals, a polished bezel secured by visible screws and a bracelet whose links continue the exposed-screw motif.
The silvered opaline dial keeps the look traditional and versatile. A seven-sided crown set with a faceted synthetic spinel adds the characteristic Cartier accent, while the sword-shaped hands maintain the formal character of the dial.
The polished bezel is also one of the first areas to inspect on a pre-owned example. Surface marks are normal on a watch that has been worn, but deep scratches, distorted edges or uneven refinishing can affect both appearance and value. Honest wear is generally easier to assess than a case whose original geometry has been softened by aggressive polishing.

Inside the WSSA0029 is Cartier’s calibre 1847 MC, a mechanical movement with automatic winding. Cartier explains that the name recalls 1847, the year the Maison was founded, and describes the movement as designed for everyday use.
The medium Santos uses a simple time-only display, with no date window interrupting the Roman-numeral dial. That symmetry is part of the reference’s appeal, but the actual performance of any pre-owned watch still needs to be checked. A buyer should confirm smooth winding and setting, secure crown operation and stable timekeeping rather than assuming factory performance from the model name alone.
Service documentation matters. If a seller claims recent movement work, ask for the dated Cartier or watchmaker invoice and a description of what was performed. “Serviced” should mean documented work, not simply that the watch was inspected or regulated.
SmartLink and QuickSwitch are practical features
Cartier’s bracelet systems are a meaningful part of the WSSA0029 package.
SmartLink allows selected bracelet links to be removed or installed without traditional bracelet-sizing tools. That makes basic fit adjustments easier, but a used watch should still include enough links for the intended wrist.
QuickSwitch allows the steel bracelet and supplied calfskin strap to be changed at the case connection. The system gives the watch two distinct personalities: integrated steel for a sportier look and leather for a more formal presentation.
When inspecting a pre-owned set, operate both systems carefully. Check that the bracelet and strap seat firmly, the release mechanisms work properly, the clasp closes securely and no parts have been forced or damaged. Confirm that the additional strap, folding buckle and removed bracelet links are genuinely included if the seller represents the watch as a complete set.
What to inspect when buying pre-owned
1. Confirm WSSA0029. The reference should agree across the watch, papers, seller description and supplied accessories.
2. Check the bezel and case edges. Look for deep impacts, uneven polishing and softened transitions around the square case.
3. Inspect the dial printing. Roman numerals, minute track and Cartier signature should appear clean and consistent under magnification.
4. Test the crown. Confirm that the crown operates correctly and secures as intended after winding or setting.

5. Operate SmartLink and QuickSwitch. Bracelet links, strap fittings and release systems should work cleanly and lock securely.
6. Count the links and accessories. Make sure the bracelet fits, and verify the calfskin strap, folding buckle and any represented box or papers.
7. Check movement performance. Request current timing information and documentation for any claimed service.
8. Treat authenticity as a complete-watch question. A convincing dial or case is not enough; movement, serial information, bracelet, clasp, accessories and provenance should support one another.
The Rallo view
The Santos de Cartier Medium WSSA0029 is strongest as a versatile, design-led daily watch. Its 35.1 mm width and 8.83 mm thickness give it disciplined proportions, while the automatic 1847 MC movement, sapphire crystal and 100-metre water resistance add practical substance.
The bracelet and strap systems are not minor accessories; they are part of what makes this reference useful. A complete, correctly fitted example can move from steel bracelet to leather without turning the watch into a project.
Choose the WSSA0029 when you want the classic Santos shape in the more restrained medium format. Buyers who want a larger wrist presence or a date display should compare it directly with the large Santos rather than assuming the two sizes deliver the same experience.
