Casio W-86-1VQES Review: The Slim Illuminator Worth Hunting Down

A buyer-focused review of the Casio W-86-1VQES: its electroluminescent display, module 3298 features, seven-year battery estimate, practical limitations and what to check when buying used.

The Casio W-86-1VQES is the kind of inexpensive digital watch that becomes more interesting after the catalog moves on. Its basic toolkit is modest—time, day and date, a daily alarm, hourly signal, stopwatch and full-display electroluminescent light—but the execution is unusually clear. For buyers who want a compact, legible digital watch without world-time menus or oversized styling, the W-86 still makes a strong case.

The exact watch reviewed here is the black-resin W-86-1VQES configuration shown throughout the photography: blue accents around the display, a positive LCD, and the W-86 caseback marking. That specificity matters because Casio has sold many visually related modules and regional variants.

The appeal: restraint, clarity and a proper night light

The W-86 does not try to look tactical. Its display is dominated by the current time, with the day and date kept visible above it. The color is functional rather than decorative: blue labeling identifies the electroluminescent Illuminator feature while the large center digits remain the focus.

Casio’s official operation guide for module 3298 confirms that holding the light button illuminates the display with an electroluminescent panel. That produces a more even glow than the small corner lamps fitted to many basic digitals. The guide also warns that frequent lighting shortens battery life and that EL output diminishes after very long use—both points worth testing when shopping for an older example.

What module 3298 actually does

The official module 3298 guide lists switchable 12- and 24-hour time, hour, minute and seconds, date and day-of-week display, one daily alarm, an hourly time signal and a 1/100-second stopwatch. The stopwatch measures elapsed time, split time and first/second finishes, with a maximum readout of 59 minutes and 59.99 seconds.

There is no countdown timer, dual time or multi-alarm suite. That simplicity is a feature if you want a watch you can set once and understand immediately, but it is the main reason to look elsewhere if travel or interval timing is central to your use.

Battery life and calendar caveat

Casio specifies a CR2016 lithium cell and an approximate seven-year battery life, assuming one second of light use and 20 seconds of alarm operation per day. Real battery life depends on use and the condition of the watch, so a seller’s claim should not replace a fresh battery test.

The calendar is not fully automatic: Casio’s guide states that February is fixed at 28 days. In a leap year, the owner must correct the date after February 29. It is a tiny inconvenience, but it separates the W-86 from newer budget modules with full auto-calendars.

Water resistance and buying used

The watch itself is marked “50M WATER RESIST” on the front and “W.R. 5 BAR” on the back. On a used example, that original rating is not proof of present-day sealing. Gaskets age, and a battery change may have been done without a pressure test. Treat an untested vintage or discontinued W-86 as splash-safe until a competent watchmaker checks it.

Before buying, inspect the resin strap around the buckle holes and lugs for cracks, press every button, confirm that all LCD segments appear, and view the display from several angles. Test the alarm, stopwatch and light. Also examine the four back screws for damage: chewed screw heads can indicate hurried battery work, while corrosion around the backplate is a clear warning sign.

Verdict

The Casio W-86-1VQES is easy to recommend to the buyer who values legibility and a genuinely useful full-display light more than feature count. Its limitations are equally clear: a short stopwatch ceiling, no timer or dual time, and a calendar that needs leap-year correction. Buy on condition rather than nostalgia, insist on a clean display and healthy strap, and assume water resistance needs verification.

At its best, the W-86 is what a good basic digital watch should be: fast to read, simple to operate and distinctive without shouting.
