Grand Seiko “White Birch” SLGH005: A Closer Look at the High-Beat Evolution 9

The Grand Seiko SLGH005 pairs its White Birch dial and Evolution 9 case with automatic Hi-Beat calibre 9SA5 and an 80-hour power reserve.

Some watches reveal their character through color. The Grand Seiko “White Birch” SLGH005 does it through texture, proportion and movement. Its silvery-white dial is patterned after the white birch forests near the Grand Seiko Studio Shizukuishi in Iwate Prefecture, but the watch is more than a nature-inspired design. It is also one of the clearest expressions of Grand Seiko’s Evolution 9 approach and a showcase for the high-beat calibre 9SA5.

The exact reference covered here is SLGH005. That distinction matters because Grand Seiko has produced more than one watch associated with the White Birch name. The SLGH005 is the stainless-steel, automatic Hi-Beat 36000 model powered by calibre 9SA5. It should not be confused with the Spring Drive White Birch SLGA009 or other textured-dial Grand Seiko references.

The dial is the opening act

The SLGH005’s dial is not a flat white surface. Its deep, irregular vertical pattern is designed to evoke the trunks and texture of the birch forest surrounding the Shizukuishi studio where Grand Seiko makes its mechanical watches. Depending on the light, the dial can appear bright silver, soft gray or almost white.

That changing appearance is balanced by substantial applied hour markers and broad hands. Their polished and textured surfaces create contrast rather than relying on strong color. A tempered blue seconds hand provides the one sharp accent and makes the high-frequency sweep easier to notice.

The date sits at three o’clock. On a dial this expressive, a date window will always divide opinion, but it also reinforces the SLGH005’s identity as a practical daily watch rather than a purely decorative piece.

Evolution 9 proportions

The SLGH005 belongs to the Evolution 9 Collection, which develops the Grand Seiko Style first established in 1967. Here, that means a low center of gravity, a broad stance, strong indexes and hands designed for immediate reading.

The stainless-steel case measures 40.0 mm in diameter, 47.0 mm from lug to lug and 11.7 mm thick. The bracelet is also stainless steel, with a folding clasp and push-button release. A box-shaped sapphire crystal covers the dial, with an anti-reflective coating on its inner surface. The screw-down crown and 10-bar water resistance make the watch suitable for ordinary daily exposure to water, though it is not presented as a dive watch.

The case finishing is central to the design. Hairline-brushed surfaces sit beside distortion-free mirror-polished areas produced with Grand Seiko’s Zaratsu polishing technique. Those contrasting finishes help the case change character as it moves through different light, much like the dial.

Calibre 9SA5 is the technical centerpiece

The movement visible through the sapphire case back is Grand Seiko calibre 9SA5, an automatic movement that can also be wound by hand. It runs at 36,000 vibrations per hour, or 5 Hz, which is why Grand Seiko describes it as Hi-Beat 36000.

High-frequency movements can demand more energy, yet the 9SA5 provides approximately 80 hours of power reserve when fully wound. Grand Seiko achieves that with twin barrels and its Dual Impulse Escapement, which is designed to transfer energy efficiently. The movement also uses a free-sprung balance and an overcoil developed specifically for the calibre.

Grand Seiko states a mean daily rate of +5 to -3 seconds per day under controlled testing before the movement is installed in the case. The company separately gives a normal-use accuracy range of +8 to -1 seconds per day. That distinction is worth understanding: the tighter figure is a controlled movement test, while the normal-use figure accounts for the conditions a finished watch encounters on the wrist.

The 9SA5 also includes a stop-seconds function, date display and an instant date-change mechanism. Its bridges and finishing draw on the landscape around Shizukuishi, so the view through the case back connects the movement to the same place that inspired the dial.

What it is like as a daily watch

On paper, the SLGH005 occupies useful middle ground. Its 40 mm diameter gives it presence without pushing into oversized territory, while its 11.7 mm thickness is relatively restrained for an automatic high-beat watch with an 80-hour reserve. The 47 mm lug-to-lug measurement is the number to consider most carefully when judging fit.

Its 10-bar water resistance, screw-down crown, sapphire crystal and steel bracelet support everyday use. At the same time, the polished surfaces and highly textured dial give it a more elevated character than a typical sports watch. Owners should expect the broad polished areas to show wear over time, particularly if the watch is worn daily.

The bracelet uses a 22 mm width at the case, helping the watch feel visually grounded. As with any integrated design decision, buyers should try the clasp and bracelet fit in person if possible. Comfort depends not only on case diameter but also on wrist shape, link articulation and whether the available adjustment positions suit the wearer.

Buyer’s perspective

The strongest reason to consider the SLGH005 is that its design and movement tell the same story. The birch-inspired dial, Evolution 9 case and technically ambitious 9SA5 are not isolated features. They work together as an argument for what a modern Grand Seiko mechanical watch can be.

Before buying, confirm the exact reference on the warranty card and case documentation. A seller describing a watch only as “White Birch” has not provided enough information, because the name can refer to different Grand Seiko models with different movements. For this article, the correct reference is SLGH005, the automatic Hi-Beat 36000 model.

A pre-owned example should be checked for case condition, bracelet completeness, service history and actual timekeeping. Deep refinishing can soften the crisp transitions between brushed and polished surfaces that are essential to the Evolution 9 case. Accuracy should be evaluated over several days in normal use rather than judged from a single short reading.

The Rallo view

The Grand Seiko SLGH005 succeeds because it offers more than a striking dial. It pairs a distinctive interpretation of the Shizukuishi landscape with thoughtful proportions, everyday specifications and one of Grand Seiko’s most important modern mechanical movements.

For collectors who value visible craftsmanship and high-frequency engineering, the White Birch SLGH005 is a compelling modern reference. The dial may attract the first look, but the case architecture and calibre 9SA5 provide the depth that makes the watch worth studying.
