Rolex Explorer II 226570: White Dial or Black Dial?

White m226570-0001 or black m226570-0002? Both Explorer II 226570 configurations share the same 42 mm case and calibre 3285. Here is how to choose and what to inspect pre-owned.

Rolex Explorer II 226570: White Dial or Black Dial?

The modern Rolex Explorer II reference 226570 is offered in two factory dial configurations that share the same case, movement, bracelet and technical capability. Rolex identifies the white-dial watch as m226570-0001 and the black-dial watch as m226570-0002.

That makes this a cleaner decision than many Rolex comparisons. Buyers are not choosing between different metals, movements or bracelet types. They are choosing which dial gives the 42 mm Explorer II the character they want.

The specification both versions share

Both watches use a 42 mm Oyster case in Oystersteel with a fixed, 24-hour graduated bezel. The screw-down Twinlock crown and Oyster construction provide a manufacturer-rated water resistance of 100 metres / 330 feet. A scratch-resistant sapphire crystal carries a Cyclops lens over the date.

Inside is Rolex manufacture calibre 3285, a self-winding mechanical GMT movement with approximately 70 hours of power reserve. Its functions include an orange 24-hour hand, an independently adjustable local hour hand, an instantaneous date and stop-seconds for precise time setting. Rolex specifies precision of -2/+2 seconds per day after casing.

The three-piece Oyster bracelet uses a folding Oysterlock safety clasp and the Easylink comfort extension, which provides approximately 5 mm of additional length without changing links.

White dial: m226570-0001

The white dial creates the highest-contrast version of the Explorer II. Black surrounds on the hour markers and hands stand clearly against the white background, while the orange 24-hour hand becomes the visual focal point.

Collectors often call this the Polar Explorer II, but the factory identifier matters more than the nickname. For the current 226570 generation, the exact white-dial configuration is m226570-0001.

The practical appeal is straightforward: it is distinctive from a distance and unusually bright for a modern Rolex Professional model. It also gives a collection variety when the owner already has several black-dial sports watches.

Black dial: m226570-0002

The black-dial m226570-0002 gives the same watch a more conventional tool-watch appearance. The orange 24-hour hand still supplies a strong color accent, but the overall presentation is darker and more restrained.

For a buyer who wants the Explorer II to move easily between casual use and less sporty settings, the black dial may feel more versatile. It also places the watch visually closer to the traditional black-dial language found across much of the Rolex Professional range.

The fixed bezel changes the experience

The Explorer II should not be treated as a GMT-Master II with a steel bezel. Its engraved 24-hour bezel is fixed. Together with the dedicated 24-hour hand, it was designed to distinguish day from night in environments where normal light cues may disappear. The independently adjustable local hour hand also allows the watch to display a second time zone.

Because the bezel does not rotate, it does not offer the same additional time-zone flexibility as the rotating 24-hour bezel on a GMT-Master II. That difference is part of the Explorer II’s identity, not a missing feature.

What to inspect when buying pre-owned

1. Confirm the exact factory configuration. White dial should be identified as m226570-0001; black dial as m226570-0002. Make sure the watch, photographs, description and supplied paperwork agree.

2. Test the local-hour and date functions. The local hour hand should advance independently in one-hour steps, and the date should operate correctly as the hour hand crosses midnight.

3. Inspect the fixed bezel. Its broad brushed surface can show marks clearly. Check the engraved numerals, finish and edge condition under sharp lighting.

4. Check the bracelet and clasp. Confirm the Oysterlock closes securely, the Easylink operates correctly and enough original links are included for the intended wrist.

5. Separate factory specifications from the individual watch. Timing, water resistance and power reserve should be tested on the actual example, especially when its service history is incomplete.

The RALLO view

Choose the white-dial m226570-0001 when you want the most recognizable and visually distinct version of the Explorer II. Choose the black-dial m226570-0002 when you prefer a darker, more understated tool watch.

There is no technical winner: both are reference 226570, both use calibre 3285, and both deliver the same case, bracelet and GMT capability. The better choice is the dial you will still enjoy after the novelty of the purchase has passed.
