The Rolex GMT-Master II: How a Pilot’s Tool Became a Modern Classic

Born for intercontinental travel, the GMT-Master II turned a practical second-time-zone display into one of Rolex’s most recognizable collector platforms.

The GMT-Master II is one of Rolex’s most expressive professional watches. Its extra hand and 24-hour bezel were designed for travel, yet the model has become a natural choice for collectors who may never set foot in a cockpit.

Built around a second time zone

The original GMT-Master was developed in the 1950s for airline crews. The central idea is still elegant: a 24-hour hand works with the rotating 24-hour bezel to make a second time zone readable at a glance. On the GMT-Master II, the local hour hand can be adjusted independently, making the watch especially practical when crossing time zones.

More than a red-and-blue bezel

The red-and-blue bezel is the instantly recognizable image, but it is only one part of the story. Black, red-and-black and blue-and-black bezel combinations give the collection different personalities, while the basic GMT layout stays coherent across generations.

References reward close attention

A GMT-Master II is a collection where small changes matter. Bracelet style, bezel configuration, case generation and calibre can all alter the wearing experience. A strong buying conversation starts with how you travel and wear the watch, then narrows to the references that fit.

A watch that moves easily between settings

The GMT-Master II is practical enough for frequent travel and refined enough for everyday city wear. That versatility is why it continues to feel current: it has a real purpose, but it never looks like a piece of equipment that stayed in the past.
